Portland’s been lubricating the local small business Christmas shopping experience for 13 years with Merry Madness, the one-night-a-year mass shopping and sipping party that keeps the shops open & serving tastes of wine or cocoa till 10pm. It’s a great idea that for some indiscernible reason the Newbury Street League has passed on, but it’s a natural for the Newbs. This year, about a dozen Newbury Street independent merchants are taking it into our own mittens & starting our own Merry Madness Holiday Stroll on Newbury Street. At least 12 merchants have signed on to date, promising to keep their doors open and the refreshments pouring till 9pm.
