With so much buzz around the Super Bowl you might have missed this story in the NY Times Magazine yesterday. Summary: couple adopts two babies from Russia in 1999. Not siblings, but from the same orphanage. Their little girl thrives, but their new baby boy does not. At age 4, he’s diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, meaning he’s suffered irreversible central nervous system and brain damage. He’s prone to spontaneous angry outbursts and inappropriate gestures, he speaks in babble and his condition is worsening. His IQ, tested at a level of 80, is gradually dropping. He is pretty much uncontrollable, and worse, he’s emotionally unreachable. It’s a tragedy.
Enter Chancer the Wonder Dog. It’s such a great story, you’ll just have to read it.
