Reducing Your Carbon Paw-print: Earth-Friendly Products for Dogs & Cats

Do you know about the paw-some eco-friendly pet brands – like food, treats, toys and beds for your cats and dogs – that can actually help you mimimize your carbon paw-print while taking the very best care of your pets and the planet?  Here are some of our favorites!

Sustainable Pet Food

Open Farm was founded on rigorous ethical sourcing principles in 2014 after the founders searched unsuccessfully for sustainable and ethically sourced pet food for their own dogs. Since then Open Farm has made natural and good-for-the-planet dog food, cat foodsupplements, bowl boosters and treats that set the bar for the industry by committing to sustainability, ethics and transparency and the humane treatment of animals. All of their farms are audited for the most stringent animal Open Farm GoodBowlwelfare standards. With their “Know Your Footprint” feature, you can learn about Open Farm’s sustainability and animal welfare standards as well as the carbon footprint of each product. Their eco goals are to divert at least 90% of solid waste produced by sending it to recovery and recycling facilities and to have all of their packaging optimized for recycling systems in the US and Canada by 2025.  Till then you can sign-up for Terracycle and return your empty pet food bags for recycling.  Open Farm offsets emissions using high impact programs with verifiable carbon offsets.  Check out: Open Farm Bone Broth in Beef, or any of the new GoodBowl kibble available in Chicken or Salmon for cats or Chicken, Beef or Salmon for dogs.

Earthborn’s UPCs for Trees program actually plants one tree for every UPC returned.  At the time of writing this post, Earthborn has planted an astounding 1,131,704 trees around the world.  Want to turn your used Earthborn packaging into a new tree planted?  Cut out the UPC and bring it to our stores or mail to Earthborn. And the packaging itself is made from 25% recycled materials.

Acana Freeze-dried Patties for DogsChampion Pet Foods, maker of Orijen and Acana, is a leader in sustainable sourcing and stewardship of animals and the planet. Ingredients are responsibly farmed, ranched, or fished local to their award-winning DogStar kitchens by people they know and trust. Champion is in the process of transitioning all their kibble, freeze dry foods and freeze dry treat bags to packaging designed for recycling. Their wet food cans are already recyclable. In addition they now use laser printed labels instead of pre-printed case labels, a change estimated to prevent 10,000 pounds of waste annually. All of their kitchens divert waste away from landfill.  The Acheson Kitchen sends waste to an anaerobic digester, which is then made into a renewable energy source.  Check out: Orijen canned food for cats and  Acana Freeze-dried patties for dogs.

Earth-friendly Dog and Cat Toys

Since 1996 West Paw has manufactured all of their toys, beds and blankets with care using safe, sustainable materials that are better for the earth, for their workers, and your pets.  West Paw toys made with ZOGOFLEX®, their own USA-made proprietary formula, use a plastic blend that can be ground up and recycled into more toys. Though nothing is indestructible, these toys come close…..and if your dog does chew up their ZOGOFLEX® toy, West Paw will replace it for free.  Check out: the Toppl, a cavity toy you can stuff and freeze, a favorite of our local trainers.  West Paw Toppl Toy

West Paw Feast MatWest Paw SEAFLEX™ toys and bowls are made from their own safe and sustainable material that’s 100% recyclable. Made from 88% zero-waste ZOGOFLEX®, 12% reclaimed ocean-bound plastic, and 0% bad stuff. No latex. No Phthalates and no BPA.  We’re particularly excited about West Paw’s new Feast Mat.  It’s an all-in-one toy and feeder made with SEAFLEX™.  Fill the Feast Mat with your pup’s meal, and she’ll naturally eat more slowly, easing digestion.  It makes meal time fun, and the licking required and stimulation it provides soothes anxiety.

Karma Cat Wool Felt Cat Toy

Karma Cat cat toys are handmade from a blend of all natural Himalayan and New Zealand wools and AZO free, non-toxic dyes. The lanolin-rich wool naturally attracts your cat, and is anti-microbial and odor resistant.  You’ll love the creative styles in vibrant natural colors. And there’s actually an oral care bonus: the wool’s rough fibers really help scrape plaque off your cat’s teeth and stimulate the gum line, supporting circulation and promoting dental health.

What’s the Buzz

Project Hive Chew Toy

Pollenating bees are critical to forest conservation and to the world’s food production. Through their partnership with 1% for the Planet, Project Hive gives away at least 1% of their revenues to saving the bees. And thats not all. Project Hive is certified carbon neutral by The Climate Change Project, and operates as a climate-neutral organization for Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions.  All Project Hive toys are BPA-free, latex-free, phthalate-free, non-toxic, and #7 recyclable.  Check out: the Hive Chew Toy, and fill it with Project Hive Training Treats (made with organic peanut butter and honey).

Here’s something to Chew On

Canophera Coffee Wood + Cocoa Chews

Canophera makes coffee wood chews from 100% coffee wood and coco-fiber.  Dogs naturally love gnawing on them.  And you’ll love that they are free from sugar, caffeine, animal byproducts, artificial ingredients, and additives. Both coffee wood and coco fiber are byproducts of other agricultural industries (coffee growing and food production), so no trees are cut to make the chews. They are available in multiple sizes and are strong enough for even tough chewers. When they’re eventually gnawed down to a too-small size, you can compost them.  Check out: Canophera Coffee Wood + Coco Chews or Canophera Coffee Wood Sticks.

Speaking Litter-ly

Weruva’s It’s a Tea Potty cat litter is a naturally clumping clay-free and grain-free litter made from responsibly sourced Hinoki Weruva It's A Tea Potty Cat Litter wood, a kind of Japanese cypress.  The hinoki wood pellets used in Tea Potty litter are a byproduct of the fabrication of flooring, furniture, sporting equipment, and even musical instruments. Hinoki wood is naturally anti-fungal, bacteria-suppressant, and a natural insecticide/ pesticide. And it smells good, too.

World’s Best Cat Litter is a natural, whole-kernel corn litter with super-absorbent granules that trap odor and form tight clumps on contact with moisture. It’s pet-, people-, and planet-friendly.  Because it’s so good at controlling odor, you can use a lot less than clay, and then compost it when it’s time to replace it.

Sustainable Snoozing

Molly Mutt Stuffable Dog Duvet

Molly Mutt makes dog ‘duvets’.  These beautifully designed stuffable dog bed covers are sold without poly fill inserts.  You actually stuff the duvet yourself!  That means you are not supporting the plastic industry, which makes the virgin poly fill stuffing used in most dog beds.  And it means dramatically less petroleum and cardboard used for shipping.  You can use up your own old clothing or recycled materials to stuff your dog’s beautiful new bed.  And Bonus, your pup is comforted because the bed smells like their human family.  Check out: the Dreams Dog Duvet, and matching Dreams Car Seat Cover.  Like Project Hive, Molly Mutt is certified carbon neutral by The Change Climate Project. Treats with Benefits

Polka Dog Green Monstah treats (available in training-sized Bits and bigger Bones) tackle two threats to the ocean: shrinking seaweed ecosystems and invasive marine species.  These tasty Polka Dog Green Monstah Bitsnuggets and bones are sourced with nutrient-dense kelp grown through Regenerative Ocean Farming. And don’t miss our most popular dental chew,  Icelandic+ Collagen Fish Wrapped ChewsIcelandic+ Whole Herring

Project Hive’s goal is to establish 50 million square feet of wildflower habitat by 2025.  So it’s not surprise that their treats and chew sticks are made in the US with organic honey – and all non-GMO ingredients.  Every purchase directly helps establish healthy bee habitat through their non-profit partners: The Bee and Butterfly Habitat Fund and the Canadian Honey Council.

The Straight Poop

No conversation about reducing your carbon paw-print would be complete without talking about poop bags.  So what’s the scoop on those green bags you see dangling from dispensers on leashes in dog parks everywhere? Those are Earth Rated biodegradable poop bags, made from 65% certified post-consumer recycled plastic, they give a second life to more than 5 million pounds of landfill-bound plastic each year.

Appreciation Days for Dog Trainers

We love dogs. And if you spend a lot of time with lots of different kinds of dogs, you get that dogs need training.  And by that I am not at the moment talking about what humans need from dogs.   Independent of what we might want from them, dogs need training to support their emotional well-being and physical safety.

But I digress. We love our local dog trainers, humans committed to helping dogs become confident, happy beings who can live their lives safely and with a steady stream of positive reinforcement – which is, even beyond food, what they live for.

If you are a local trainer, be sure to register with us for special perks year round. And throughout the year we hold double points days just for you.  During the month of September 2023, all local trainers get double points on every purchase!

(We have to add the extra points manually so you won’t see them appear for a few days, but don’t worry – all you have to do is be registered with us a trainer and we’ll make sure the extra points are added to your account within a few days of purchases, in stores or online)

Natural Anxiety Relief for Pets: CBD and CBDA

CBD products – top quality, rigorously tested – are my first, and usually last, recommendation for anxiety relief for pets.

When pets are anxious, they are suffering.  Think of a time when you were really anxious.  It might have felt manageable – but then imagine that whatever was causing your anxiety made you intensely afraid….you didn’t understand what was happening, and you couldn’t do anything to stop it.  Without some kind of relief, anxiety and the suffering that goes with it escalates.  A friend’s Aussie, Roo, would become so terrified when left alone, she would gnaw and paw at the door.  One day, when left alone for a short time, she destroyed a window to get outside. Thankfully, she didn’t seriously cut herself, and she was found safe.  It was nightmare for her and for her mom.  We all know lots of stories like this. Now with advances in research and testing, we have effective and safe remedies – we can manage anxiety before it gets to a harmful place.

What is CBD?  CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is non-psychoactive cannabinoid found particularly in hemp plants.  Humans as well as dogs and cats have receptors in our nervous system that bond with compounds in the CBD.  These compounds have the impact of regulating functions like mood, energy, pain, appetite and sleep.

What is CBDA?  CBDA, cannabidiolic acid, is the acidic precursor to CBD.  CBDA is converted to CBD when the cannabis plant is heated or exposed to UV light.  CBDA stimulates seratonin release and is believed to have powerful effect on the nervous system, even powerful enough to minimize seizures – it’s said to be 19x more effective than CBD. It is claimed to have other potential benefits – not proven yet – in fighting inflammation, pain, and cancer.  CBDA is more bioavailable than CBD, so it’s readily absorbed into the body’s receptors and is thought to be another option for pets who don’t get benefits from CBD.   CBDA was overlooked initially – but you’ll see a lot more in the future about CBDA for natural anxiety relief for pets.

Can CBD or CBDA get my pet high?  No.  Pet CBD products are made from hemp, not marijuana – and there is no intoxicating effect.  THC, the compound in marijuana that gets you high, is only present up to 0.3% in hemp plants, which is way too low a dose to intoxicate anyone.

Can I give my pet too much CBD?  Provided your pet doesn’t have any contraindications, like being on a medication (eg a blood thinner) that would be adversely affected (check with your vet if you are not sure), the only down side in giving too much is lethargy, diarrhea or nausea from too much of the oil that is used as the carrier.

Can I give my pet CBD made for people?  No!  If you use a CBD/CBDA product do not share it with your pet.  THC is highly toxic to pets and may be present at a high enough level to cause a severe reaction.

When and how should I give CBD/CBDA to my pet?  Only trust reputable companies with third party testing.  If your pet is on medication of any kind, check with your vet before trying CBD or CBDA. Start with a low does of about 2mg of CBD for every 10lb of dog, or 3mg CBD for every 10 lbs of cat.  Increase from there if your pet needs more for to reach the desired effect.

Which brands do we trust?  We are true believers in ElleVetAustin & Kat and Super Snouts.  They all work incredibly well, are rigorously tested, and have real people behind them who are committed to helping pets live healthier lives.  ElleVet is made right in South Portland Maine – and Austin & Kat started here too (but eventually moved to the west coast).

Are any of these brands recommended by vets?  Yes.  ElleVet in particular is popular among vets for their commitment to research and clinical trials.  Holistic vets often recommend CBD/CBDA for natural anxiety relief for pets as well as for pain, trauma/healing, inflammation, seizures and appetite.

Have you used CBD/CBDA personally?  Yes.  I currently use Austin & Kat’s Extra Strength CBD Oil for Dogs & Cats 600mg.  Mercy weighs 50lbs, and I give her about half a dropper, about 10mg, if she’s mildly anxious. For thunderstorms or fireworks, I give her a full dropper or 20mg.  I also use CBD for myself all the time, and have even taken some pet hemp by Super Snouts when out of my own oil.

Where can I get them?  We have plenty of stock in our stores and online, for dogs and cats.

During Phase Two, we will probably close again for another 3 days, from a Monday through Wednesday…and we’ll close early the Sunday before to prep too, so please watch for updates and plan to stock up in advance.

That will be a great time to take advantage of our new SAME DAY (or later) DELIVERY service for all in-stock items – any time is great for same delivery in fact.  Why wait when you can have it brought to your door, for free (max 50 lbs, minimum $100, within 10 miles).

Tips for Protecting Pets from Extreme Cold

  • While the temperature may be in the 30s Fahrenheit, wind chill can bring the felt temperature in to the danger zone
  • At 32F degrees and below, more vulnerable pets (very small, or elderly or very young, or those with thin coats) should only be brought outside with your supervision
  • Below 20 degrees, the risk of frostbite and hypothermia increase dramatically
  • During extreme cold, single digits and below, is a time for quick potty breaks only.  Dogs should be let out only to relieve themselves, and cats should be kept indoors at all times
  • Remove ice, salt and caked mud from your pet’s paws and coat
  • Before going outside, apply paw protection like paw wax or booties, to protect against salt, chemicals and ice
  • When walking outside, keep dogs on a snug collar or harness and leash and keep them away from open water
  • Watch out for and clean up any spilled antifreeze immediately – its sweetness is appealing to some animals, and one lick can be fatal
  • Watch our for cats climbing into your car’s wheel wells or engine. Knock on the hood before starting your car if you suspect a cat may be hiding under the hood
  • When inside, a dog sweater helps retain core body heat for very young or old pets, or those with thin coats
  • Keep your pet’s bed away from cold or drafty areas, and provide a blanket for extra warmth
  • Provide needed mental and physical stimulation with enrichment toys for dogs and puzzles for cats
  • When indoors, dogs typically receive less exercise during cold weather and therefore may require fewer calories. You may want to consider feeding them smaller portions in order to avoid weight gain
  • Provide plenty of clean drinking water
  • Leave your pets at home if you need to go out, and don’t leave them in the car for any amount of time in extreme temperatures

Symptoms of Hypothermia

  • Weak pulse
  • Dilated pupils
  • Decreased heart rate
  • Extreme shivering
  • Pale or blue mucous membranes
  • Body temperature below 95 degrees
  • Unconsciousness
